Shane Co., the largest privately owned jeweler in the United States, operates 22 retail locations across 13 states, offering an extensive range of fine jewelry from engagement rings to custom pendants. Seeking to elevate their physical brand presence, Shane Co. partnered with Kargo to completely redesign their packaging ecosystem.

Kargo developed a unified, premium packaging system spanning twelve product categories, multiple box formats, and shipping materials. Designed to protect, present, and delight, the cohesive collection arrives gift-ready for both the retail showroom and the customer's doorstep, seamlessly scaling consistent brand quality across all channels.

Challenge

Shane Co.’s packaging spanned twelve product categories and multiple box formats, but the system lacked cohesion. The visual identity did not align with the modern, luxury experience the brand wanted to build, especially for the younger audience they were targeting.

The packaging also had to serve multiple functions. It needed to protect jewelry in transit, present beautifully in retail, and arrive gift-ready without extra wrapping. At the same time, the shipping process had to remain efficient without extra packing materials adding cost and complexity.

Ultimately, the challenge went beyond aesthetics. Shane Co. needed a scalable packaging architecture that could roll out nationally while elevating the brand at every customer touchpoint.

Solution

Kargo led the project from creative development through production and logistics. The first phase established a clean, modern design centered on the gifting experience, treating the box and the presentation as one cohesive system.

The packaging features three signature materials in Shane Co.'s brand colors: custom embossed cream art paper, double-face satin ribbon, and dye-to-match microfiber. This consistent use of premium materials and antique foil detailing makes every box instantly recognizable as Shane Co.

Each custom-sized hinge box is fully lined and padded. Two foil pinstripes mark the opening point, adding a thoughtful touch to the unboxing. Every jewelry box ships inside an outer gift box with a built-in bow, arriving ready to give with no extra wrapping needed.

Finally, the retail bags double as gift bags, and the canvas ship bags protect the boxes in transit while eliminating the need for extra packaging fillers.

The Kargo Approach

Design

  • Brand-aligned materials: Custom embossed art paper, double-face satin ribbon, dye-to-match microfiber, and antique foil are applied consistently in Shane Co.'s signature colors.

  • Consistency across formats: Material and color standards hold across twelve product categories and various box sizes, from ring boxes to large necklace cases.

  • Unified experience: Every touchpoint, from the jewelry box interior to the retail bag, presents a cohesive brand identity.

Function

  • Custom-sized hinge box: Fully lined and padded to protect the product.

  • Built-in bow: Eliminates the need for additional gift wrapping.

  • Two foil pinstripes: Clearly mark the opening point without the need for instructions.

  • Sized retail shopping bags: Accommodate every format in the lineup, functioning as gift bags at the point of sale.

Impact

  • Custom box sizing: Engineered around standard FedEx carton dimensions to pack multiple units efficiently without filler.

  • Canvas ship bag: Eliminates petroleum-based dunnage and adds a reusable, premium element to the customer experience.

  • Built-in gift presentation: Removes the need for external wrapping, reducing material use and delivering a cleaner, more intentional gifting experience.

Sometimes, achieving the perfect packaging design requires multiple iterations. Here’s a look at a few of the concepts we reviewed during the development of the Cuff Box.

Shane Co. came to Kargo with a challenge: their packaging was fragmented across product categories and didn't reflect the brand they were building. The solution required both great design and operational precision, including luxurious materials, protective packaging that presented jewelry beautifully, and an efficient shipping system that worked at scale.
