Packaging That Performs for a Heritage Brand
Shane Co., the largest privately owned jeweler in the United States, operates 22 retail locations across 13 states. They needed a unified packaging system that could protect product, present consistently across categories, and work efficiently in both retail and shipping environments.
Kargo developed a complete packaging system spanning twelve product categories, multiple box formats, and shipping materials. The solution was built to perform commercially and operationally — protecting jewelry, reducing extra materials, and delivering a consistent experience from showroom to doorstep.
The Challenge
Shane Co.’s existing packaging lacked cohesion across product categories and formats. It needed to protect jewelry in transit, present well in retail, and arrive gift-ready without additional wrapping. At the same time, the system had to remain efficient at national scale without adding unnecessary cost or complexity.
The core need was a scalable packaging architecture that could perform across retail and shipping while meeting brand standards.
The Solution
Kargo managed the project from development through production and logistics. We created a cohesive system using consistent materials and structures across all formats.
Key elements included:
Custom-sized, fully lined and padded hinge boxes for product protection
Outer gift boxes designed to arrive ready-to-give, eliminating extra wrapping
Retail bags that also function as gift bags
Canvas ship bags that protect boxes in transit and remove the need for traditional dunnage
Materials were selected for durability, consistency, and practical performance across the full range of products.
Impact
Stronger product protection across categories
Elimination of extra wrapping and dunnage
More efficient shipping through right-sized structures
Consistent packaging system that scales nationally
Clearer brand presentation without added operational complexity

The Kargo Approach
Design
Brand-aligned materials: Custom embossed art paper, double-face satin ribbon, dye-to-match microfiber, and antique foil are applied consistently in Shane Co.'s signature colors.
Consistency across formats: Material and color standards hold across twelve product categories and various box sizes, from ring boxes to large necklace cases.
Unified experience: Every touchpoint, from the jewelry box interior to the retail bag, presents a cohesive brand identity.
Function
Custom-sized hinge box: Fully lined and padded to protect the product.
Built-in bow: Eliminates the need for additional gift wrapping.
Two foil pinstripes: Clearly mark the opening point without the need for instructions.
Sized retail shopping bags: Accommodate every format in the lineup, functioning as gift bags at the point of sale.
Impact
Custom box sizing: Engineered around standard FedEx carton dimensions to pack multiple units efficiently without filler.
Canvas ship bag: Eliminates petroleum-based dunnage and adds a reusable, premium element to the customer experience.
Built-in gift presentation: Removes the need for external wrapping, reducing material use and delivering a cleaner, more intentional gifting experience.
Developing the right packaging system often requires testing multiple approaches. Here’s a look at a few of the concepts reviewed during the development of the Cuff Box.
Shane Co. needed a packaging system that could work across product categories, protect jewelry, and perform efficiently at scale. The solution required practical structure, consistent materials, and operational precision — resulting in packaging that met brand standards while supporting real commercial and shipping requirements.
