One Bag That Ships, Protects, and Returns
Rent the Runway needed a cost-effective way to ship rented designer clothing in clean condition and return it through the mail in the same package. Renee Graham developed the solution while leading packaging at RTR: a custom garment bag that zips closed and becomes a durable shipping envelope. The project later received the 2016 NPF Mail Innovation Award from the United States Postal Service. This work sits behind how Kargo approaches reusable packaging, operations, and material performance today.
The Challenge
RTR was growing quickly and still using a standard shipping model that created waste, added handling, and drove up cost. Garments needed protection from weather and transit damage, had to arrive ready to wear, and had to return through the same system for cleaning and re-rental. The packaging also had to work at scale. It could not add dimensional weight or complexity, and it had to hold up cycle after cycle without failing.

The core idea was simple. The package customers received should also be the package they sent back.

The system was tested for six months before rollout, covering protection, return handling, cleaning, and shipping performance.
The Solution
The reusable bag replaced the previous shipping method. One construction handled outbound protection, customer use, and inbound return, removing extra packaging materials from the cycle and reducing both shipping cost and waste. Because the bag doubled as the return envelope, customers had nothing extra to manage. The construction stayed in circulation through repair rather than replacement, keeping the system efficient at scale.
