One Insulated Bag That Fits Every Order Size

Walden Local is a New England meat delivery co-op built on pasture-raised, whole-animal farming. Their model depends on reliable cold-chain delivery, with frozen orders traveling from a high-volume warehouse to a customer's doorstep, arriving still frozen, every month.

Kargo developed a reusable cold-chain packaging system built around a single insulated delivery bag. It handles multiple order sizes, maintains temperature during transit, and keeps dry ice away from customers, all while folding flat between deliveries.

The Challenge

Reusable cold-chain packaging for a monthly meat delivery service seems simple enough. It isn't.

A single bag had to work across order sizes with no separate SKUs. It needed to maintain temperature during transit, be easy to wipe down between uses, and fold flat for storage at home. It had to look good on a doorstep and be quick to load in a busy warehouse. And it had to keep customers from ever coming into contact with dry ice.

Any one of these challenges is manageable on its own. Getting all of them right in a single design is where the real work begins.

Design & Materials

Every material choice served the cold chain, the warehouse, or the customer — often all three.

  • Waterproof exterior in a performance fabric, specified in the brand's signature dark forest green

  • Layered foam insulation to hold temperature while keeping the bag light and cost-efficient

  • Foil lining that wipes clean and sews cleanly into the construction

  • Hidden dry ice pockets so cold releases into the bag and customers never touch the ice

  • Printed directions inside the lid for clear, at-a-glance use

  • Promotional board that doubles as a divider, separating frozen meat from eggs

  • Two-way closure — Velcro folds the bag into a triangle for small orders; a full zip closes it square for larger volumes and clean stacking

The Solution

One bag that works for every order size. No compromises, no extra SKUs.

The design adapts to whatever's inside — Velcro folds it down for smaller orders, a full zip squares it up for larger ones, with easy stacking either way. It keeps temperature stable throughout the cold-chain journey, then folds flat when the job is done.

From there, we developed a small range of pieces that carried the brand beyond the delivery itself:

  • A premium Tyvek edition with a butcher-paper look and forest green handles — used as an anniversary gift and kept as a family cooler or grocery bag

  • A craft-board cookbook in a three-ring binder, tabbed by meat type, so monthly recipes become a personal reference that grows over time

  • A collapsible forest green nylon tote that folds into itself for everyday errands

  • A branded tea towel in premium cotton — functional enough for daily kitchen use, considered enough to feel like a gift

Each piece shared the same visual language, so the whole system read as one brand from the doorstep to the kitchen.
